Martha Ann Keels D.D.S., Ph.D.

Adjunct Professor, UNC School of Dentistry Chapel Hill

Dr. Martha Ann Keels received her dental degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was the recipient of the NIH Dentist-Scientist Award, which funded specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry and PhD training in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina. Subsequently, she established the Pediatric Dental program at Duke University and served as the Division Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Duke Children’s Hospital for 25 years. She co-owns a private pediatric dental practice in North Durham affiliated with Duke Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Keels is a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist and holds Fellowships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American College of Dentists the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a membership in OKU Honor Dental Fraternity. She is on the editorial board of the journal, Pediatric Dentistry and the Journal of Dental Research. She has served as president of the North Carolina Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; and a member of the AAPD Council for Clinical Affairs and the AAPD Council of Scientific Affairs. She serves on the AAPD Committee on Special Health Care Needs.

She was a founding member and chair of the Section on Oral Health within the American Academy of Pediatrics.(AAP). She has co-authored several AAP guidelines ~ including Management of Dental Trauma by Pediatricians and Fluoride Guidelines for Pediatricians.

She served a 3-year term on the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs. Working with the ADA, Dr. Keels has been part of the team publishing the ADA Guidelines on Restorative Care and the ADA-FDA Radiographic Guidelines.

She presently serves on the Science Committee of International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD). Her role on this committee has been to author several international guidelines on Pediatric Periodontal Disease and Dental Acid Erosion.

She is a Past-President of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentists and Past-President of the IADR Pediatric Oral Health Research Group.

A unique aspect of Dr. Keels’ career is her ability to be a co-PI of one of the longest caries risk assessment prospective NIH-NIDOCR funded studies following 1300 children since age.one From this research, Dr. Keels has presented several talks at AADOCR, IADR and ORCA and co-authored several publications.
