John Kenney

Dr. John Kenney graduated from Loyola University Dental School in 1977. He received a master’s degree and certificate in pediatric dentistry in 1979. His thesis topic was Orofacial Injuries in Child Abuse Cases. He opened Children’s Dentistry in Park Ridge, Ill., in 1980, and semi-retired in 2018.

Dr. Kenney attended his first course in forensic dentistry at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1976, returning in 1979 to attend its Aerospace Pathology/Aviation Accident Investigation course. The following day, American Airlines lost a DC-10 with 273 victims at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Dr Kenney would join 19 other forensic dentists to identify the dead. He became board certified in 1985, and is boarded in both pediatric dentistry and forensic odontology. From 1984 to 1997, he was chief odontologist for the Cook County (Ill.) Medical Examiner, and from 1998 to 2008, a deputy coroner for DuPage County, Ill. He has lectured on five continents and published numerous articles and book chapters.

Dr Kenney has testified for prosecution and defense more than 100 times. He has participated in eight mass fatality events. During 9/11, he was primary dental advisor to the National Commander of the Federal Disaster Mortuary Operations Response Team (DMORT). Dr. Kenney served as President of the American Board of Forensic Odontology for two non-consecutive terms, and for two terms on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. For the ADA, he has lectured at several annual meetings and served in the ADA Speakers Bureau and as a consultant to the Council on Dental Practice. Currently, he is a consultant to the U.S. Department of Defense POW MIA Accounting Authority, the Davidson County TN (Metro Nashville) Medical Examiner and USDHS-ICE. He serves on the graduate faculty of NYU-Langone for the Pediatric Dental Residency Program in Nashville, Tenn.
