James L Caruso MD

James L. Caruso, MD is a board-certified forensic pathologist with more than three decades of experience spanning academic medicine, military service, and medicolegal death investigation. He served as Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner for the City and County of Denver from 2014 to 2025, following a distinguished 30-year career in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, where he retired at the rank of Captain.

Dr. Caruso is internationally recognized for his expertise in forensic pathology, drowning and diving-related deaths, and deaths occurring in challenging environments. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, is a frequent invited keynote speaker worldwide, and has played a leading role in major investigations, including U.S. Department of Defense forensic operations. He currently provides forensic pathology consultation and serves in leadership roles within major professional organizations, including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences
