Dr. LaPietra has been involved in multiple nationwide opioid and addiction educational initiatives and is the current Chair for the Pain and Addiction Care in the ED Accreditation Program through ACEP. In 2016 she was awarded the Innovation of the Year Award by the American College of Osteopathic Physicians.

Dr. LaPietra’s work has been highlighted in multiple academic journals as well as NPR, NBC, The New York Times, Fox News, The Guardian, and CNN. Her work was the basis for the “ALTO in the ED Act,” part of the legislation included in the H.R.6- SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act signed into law by President Trump in October 2018. Currently she is working on breaking down the stigma associated with opioid use disorder through patient, community, and clinician education at the local, state, and national levels, while highlighting the robust evidence supporting the mortality reduction linked with the use of Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT).
